Who Is Makkari? A Look At Marvel Comics’ Eternals Characters

When the Eternals movie was first announced at SDCC 2019 for the MCU’s Phase 4, people had questions. Who the heck were these Eternals? How will they fit into the MCU? Well, now we know (kind of). Marvel Studios released the final Eternals trailer and fans got a clearer picture of what these beautiful superheroes will be doing in the MCU. We wrote about the history of the Eternals, but basically, they’re the creation of divine beings, the Celestials (Ego, Peter Quill’s father, was one of these beings). The Celestials created early humanoids as a way to kickstart human evolution, thus creating the Eternals (the gorgeous, good-hearted ones) and the Deviants (the ugly, evil ones). The former was tasked with protecting Earth (and later, humankind) from the wicked plans of the Deviants. While we’ve gotten a glimpse of these new characters, I’m going to take a closer look at each of the 10 new superheroes. In this first post of the series, I’m asking: who is Makkari?

Who Is Makkari And What Are Her Powers?

Makkari, who is played by Lauren Ridloff, is the speedster of the Eternals, and can pretty much run at light speed for extended periods of time. While the other Eternals have the abilities to manipulate matter and use their super strength, among other powers, Makkari has focused all her energy on increasing her speed, which makes her other powers weaker. Getting faster and improving her running are her top priorities.  She can create cyclones by running in circles, and can also run up walls and across water.

Makkari loves tinkering with mechanics and can pilot most land and air vehicles. This comes as no surprise, but she loves working on and driving high speed vehicles. She attended a standard Eternal higher ed institution and learned about special tutoring regarding speed.

A History of Makkari

Makkari was one of the original Eternals created by Jack Kirby in the 1970s, although the character was originally male instead of female, just like her fellow Eternal, Sprite. Like all of the other Eternals, Makkari has been around for ages and has thus made several appearances throughout human history. From teaching writing to the Egyptians to learning philosophy with Plato to living through the Trojan War, the reign of Vlad the Impaler, and the Alamo, Makkari has lived through and experienced a lot. He was also known throughout history by a couple of names, mainly “Hurricane” and “Mercury” (again, bringing back the mythology). In the current age, Makkari is a National Security Agent named Jake Curtiss.

Another exciting aspect about Makkari? The version in Chloé Zhao’s film will be the first deaf superhero in the MCU. Ridloff, who identifies as deaf herself, told Entertainment Weekly:

“It makes so much sense to have this diversity and representation within the MCU because what the MCU is offering the world is amazing. They’re offering a way for us to hope, to be able to get up and keep going and fight for what’s important. More and more people are starting to see themselves in that universe, and that’s powerful.”

Phastos (another of Makkari’s fellow Eternals) is openly gay, Loki is gender-fluid, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first Asian-led superhero movie. We’re in exciting times and I look forward to what else is to come for the MCU!

Eternals premieres November 5, 2021 in theaters everywhere (for now).
