The film reconstructs the historic quarrel between the two Ferrari drivers: a friendship ruined by the 1982 San Marino GP, a few days before Villeneuve died in Zolder. Produced by Mark Webber, the documentary collects the testimonies of the wives and children of the two F1 drivers
Two legends of Formula 1, two historical rivals: Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi. The documentary entitled Villeneuve & Pironi, which will air at the end of 2022 on Sky Documentaries and streamed on Now, will tell, through archive footage and exclusive interviews with the family, the fascinating lives, careers and theatrical rivalry between the two Ferrari drivers: united by the same passion for speed and the determination to win, but divided by a historical and very controversial episode.

The children of Gilles, Melanie and Jacques (former Formula 1 world champion) will compete, and those of Didier who bear the names of the two drivers, Gilles and Didier, in addition to the drivers ‘companions: Gilles’ wife, Joann, and Didier’s partner, Catherine. Obviously there will be some of the most important names in Formula 1. The film, directed by Barney Shingleton and still in the shooting phase (in the UK, Canada, France and Italy), is produced by John McKenna, famous for his Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans, and by Mark Webber, former Formula 1 driver. “My family and I are delighted to participate in the making of the documentary – said Joann Villeneuve’s wife – That period and those events were traumatic for our family and, to over 40 years later they are still capable of arousing strong emotions “. Catherine Pironi added: “We are eager to let the world know what incredible men Gilles and Didier were, but also to let the new generations discover this unique and stimulating story, which goes beyond sport”.
the story of villeneuve and pironi
Many will remember the 1982 Imola GP and their duel for the first position. In that race Pironi obtained his second career victory, but he hadn’t heeded the Ferrari signs indicating slowing down to preserve the cars. Villeneuve was overtaken on the last lap. After the award ceremony, the Canadian driver accused his Ferrari teammate of stealing his victory and of being a false friend, swearing that he would never speak to him again. Rivers of ink were spent on the sporting and human affair. And even more two weeks later in Zolder, where Villeneuve, in search of redemption (?), Lost his life in an accident during qualifying. It is “a sporting and human story that remains among the most controversial and exciting ever in the history of Formula 1 – commented Roberto Pisoni, Director of Entertainment Channels Sky Italia – With Villeneuve & Pironi, thanks to the exclusive contribution of those who most of all were close to the two pilots and within that tragic story, which later became epic, we will tell about two immense champions, whose relationship went to the limit ”.
