The Old Guard 2’s Latest Production News and Story Details

Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 is officially moving forward. Here’s the latest news coming out of the production, as well as some story details.

Adapted from the comic book series of the same name created by writer Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández, Netflix’s The Old Guard is an action movie that centers on a group of mercenaries that are secretly immortal warriors who’ve spent centuries trying to better humankind. The film earned generally positive reviews and is currently the sixth most-watched Netflix Original movie of all time, so it’s no surprise the streamer is moving forward with a sequel.

Here’s everything that’s known about the as-yet-untitled The Old Guard 2 at the time of writing.

The Old Guard 2’s Story So Far

Charlize Theron as Andy in The Old Guard

The Old Guard sees the disillusioned leader of the titular group, Andromache “Andy” of Scythia, suddenly lose her super-healing abilities, much like her deceased former teammate Lykon before her. However, after James Copley, an ex-CIA operative who’s spent years researching Andy and her team’s actions throughout history, reveals that she and the others have positively affected humankind in ways that they couldn’t imagine, Andy chooses to stay with her team despite knowing her days are numbered, her faith in their mission restored.

Accompanied by Nile Freeman, a former U.S. marine and their newest member, Andy and her crew task Copley with using his experience working for the CIA to help cover their tracks (physical and digital) and find jobs for them that will benefit humankind. The first movie also has the team part ways with one of their own, Booker/Sebastian Le Livre, banishing him to live by himself for a century as punishment for betraying them by revealing their secret to the now-dead pharmaceutical company CEO Steven Merrick.

Six months later, however, Booker unexpectedly crosses paths with Quynh, Andy’s first teammate, who the others believed dead after she was accused of witchcraft and sunk to the bottom of the ocean in an iron maiden long ago. The Old Guard 2 will pick up from there, revealing if Quynh wants revenge against the others for never rescuing her or has another goal in mind, as well as her plans for Booker and whether he will seek to redeem himself for his earlier actions.

The Old Guard 2’s Cast & Crew

Netflix's The Old Guard Movie Cast

Most of The Old Guard‘s main cast members are reprising their roles for the sequel, including Charlize Theron (Andy), KiKi Layne (Nile), Matthias Schoenaerts (Booker), Chiwetel Ejiofor (James) and Veronica Ngo (Quynh), as well as Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli as Andy’s teammates and the lovers Joe/Yusuf Al-Kaysani and Nicky/Nicolò di Genova. Also back is Rucka, who is returning to write the sequel after penning the original movie based on his and Fernández’s comics.

Although The Old Guard helmer Gina Prince-Bythewood is serving as a producer on the second film, she’s bowed out of directing as a result of being attached to several new projects in the wake of the first movie’s success, including the historical action/drama The Woman King. Taking her place is Victoria Mahoney, who made history by becoming the first Black woman to helm a Star Wars film after serving as the second unit director on The Rise of Skywalker. Mahoney has also helmed episodes of You and Lovecraft Country, among other TV series.

Theron has confirmed that filming on The Old Guard 2 will begin in the first quarter of 2022. Assuming it does, that would put the sequel on a pace to begin streaming on Netflix by 2023, possibly during the summer like its predecessor did in 2020.
