The blog about news, music, cinema and series, by Raquel W. Polo
The best fiction series in the history of television. I’m not saying it, it says so on the IMdB list of best-rated series, whose third place occupies, behind Planet Earth I and II, the documentary series presented by David Attenborough.
When Spielberg finished Save Private Ryan, I had a lot of scenes shot, which I didn’t know what to do with. And so, with “leftovers” he created, together with Tom Hanks, the best war series ever; laugh at the #cocinadeaprovechamiento. It was released, curiously, two days before 9/11, that is, it just turned 20 years old, and it has been remembered again, if any of us who have seen this wonder have ever been able to forget it. By the way, Tom Hanks is preparing a podcast (who does not have a podcast these days, well me, who, to be contrary, I have a Twitch), to remember the filming and the details of the series that he produces and narrates, and of which, in addition, he directed an episode.
The Second World War, recounted, in the first person, by the Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army on its mission in Europe. And you know it’s all true, because at the end of each episode, the surviving veterans themselves make a brief appearance, commenting on what we just saw. And what we have just seen is, to say the least, brutal.
It stars some well-known TV faces: Scott Grimes (Family Five, ER, The Orville), Damian Lewis (Billions, Homeland), Ron Livingston (Sex and the City, Boardwalk Empire), Michael Cudlitz (The Walking Dead) , Southland), Neal McDonough (is there a series this man hasn’t been in?), Michael Fassbender (it’s Aguilar and Magneto, what else do you want?), Richard Speight Jr. (Supernatural, Justified), or himself Ros Geller, David Schwimmer.
It has the Golden Globe for best miniseries, six Emmys, and almost thirty other accolades. It’s an Im-pres-cin-di-ble series. It’s on HBO (before the platform changes its name and format). Due to the enormous success of this series, ten years later, they produced a kind of spin-off, in which a group of young marines experience the horror of war in the Pacific, from the battle of Guadalcanal to the end. from WWII.
The series isn’t as memorably perfect as its predecessor, but it does have some really remarkable performances. As a curiosity, Rami Malek, who would later win the Oscar for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury (who would have also turned 75 these days) and Joseph Mazzello, who was John Deacon in Bohemian Rhapsody, (well he was also the kid from Jurassic Park) they met and became great friends, a decade before the award-winning movie, in this series.
They are accompanied by James Badge Dale (World War Z, The Lone Ranger), or Jon Seda (Antonio Dawson in the Chicago series franchise), among others. Although its 8.3 note is not even close to the 9.4 of its sister series on IMdB, it nevertheless beats it in the Emmys, with eight, and it is a magnificent series, which is also worth it, and much, worth it. It is also on HBO.
